CLENE EVENTS/MEETINGS AT ALA ANNUAL 2009

CLENE has a lot of wonderful stuff going on at ALA: Programs, Preconferences, a Discussion Group, and more! We hope to see you at one of our programs and, as always, you’re invited to join us at our Board meetings; to participate, observe or just drop in to say hello.

PRECONFERENCES on Friday July 10

  • SOLD OUT!! AM Preconference: Making it Stick: Designing, Delivering, and Surviving Presentations: A polished and memorable presentation requires skills that depend on your ability to work with, influence, and persuade your audience. This interactive hands-on workshop will help you understand and develop rapport with your audience; develop active content in your presentation; help you learn to be comfortable in front of your audience; and understand when and how to use support materials.Speakers: Lori Reed, Employee Learning Coordinator for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library; Paul Signorelli, writer/trainer/consultant for libraries and nonprofit organizations (Paul Signorelli & Associates).
  • SOLD OUT!! PM Preconference: Punch it up with Pictures: Presentations with visual power: Are your presentations riddled with bullet points? Visual images often speak louder and more succinctly than words. In the tight format of a PowerPoint presentation, strategic use of images can convey more meaning than bullet points and text. The presenter skills you learn in the morning workshop on delivering an unforgettable presentation will shine brighter when your support materials complement rather than compete with you. This workshop will help you to understand how visuals communicate, show you where to find free-use images, and share some best practices for editing and adding images to your presentations. Speakers: Tony Tallent, Director of Libraries & Arts for the City of Boulder, Colorado; Michael Porter, Interactive Strategy Manager for WebJunction; Betha Gutsche, Learning Initiatives Developer for WebJunction.

A message from CLENE President Stacy Schrank and CLENE VP, Pat Carterette

A message from CLENE President Stacy Schrank and CLENE VP, Pat Carterette:

Dear CLENE Round Table Members,

CLENE Board members and some members-at-large have been meeting virtually each month since January (using OPAL web-conferencing software) to discuss ongoing round table business and projects. This has been a wonderful way to communicate with each other.

We would like to encourage all CLENE members to participate in our virtual monthly meetings. This is a great way for members to connect, communicate and collaborate.

Below is our online meeting schedule for the remainder of 2009. CLENE virtual meetings run from 2:00-3:00 EDT.

  • Wednesday, June 10
  • Thursday, July 16
  • Wednesday, August 12
  • Thursday, September 17
  • Wednesday, October 14
  • Thursday, November 19
  • Wednesday, December 9

I strongly urge you to attend the June 10th meeting. We will be discussing a proposed name change for the CLENE Round Table and we want your input!

A recent survey sent out to people involved in training, staff/professional development and continuing education suggested that most people, including CLENE members, have no clue what the CLENE acronym stands for.

The proposed name change is from CLENE Round Table to the LEARNING Round Table. Learning is what we do, what we’re passionate about and what we promote. We’re not all trainers, we’re not all educators but we’re ALL learners… and learning is what brings us all together.

ALA’s deadline for requesting a name change is June 12th. Please join the virtual meeting on June 10th and put in your two CEnts worth before it’s too late.

If you can’t attend the next virtual meeting, please send comments or questions about the name change to Stacy Schrank, CLENE President (sschrank [at] metrolibrary.org) or Pat Carterette, CLENE Vice-President (pcarterette [at] georgialibraries.org).

Join the CLENE virtual meeting in OPAL a few minutes prior to each meeting: http://www.conference321.com/masteradmin/room.asp?id=rs423c62c43df0.

If you’ve never used OPAL before, be sure to run the set-up Wizard. Here is a link to a document on how to use OPAL: http://www.opal-online.org/OPALgettingstarted.htm.
Thank you for your continued support!

Stacy and Pat

P.S. The next issue of the CLENExchange is coming soon and includes a listing of all the CLENE events taking place in Chicago. Hope to see you there!

Webinar: Libraries as Learning Organizations

Webinar: Libraries as Learning Organizations
When: Tuesday, May 26, 2009, Time: 2:00pm – 3:30pm (EDT)
Co-sponsored by CLENERT and WebJunction
Registration Link: http://evanced.info/webjunction/evanced/eventsignup.asp?ID=1592

What makes a library a learning organization? What does it take to build an organization-wide commitment to team and individual learning? Why make the effort, especially in these economic times?

Our panelists, representing libraries at different mileposts on the road to becoming learning organizations, are finding their own answers to these questions and will share challenges, strategies, and successes about the four Bs of the journey:

  • BENEFITS of a learning culture
  • BUILDING the environment
  • BEING a learning champion
  • BEYOND to sustainability.

Hear ways to use technology appropriately to enable faster, more personalized learning and to institutionalize knowledge sharing. Because most learning occurs on the job, at the point of need, you will discover ways to create a positive performance environment.

Even if your library is not yet moving in this direction, you will take away ideas that you can use immediately to implement learning solutions individually and organizationally.

Panelists:

  • Sandra Smith, Training and Development Manager, Denver Public Library
  • Michele Leininger, Information Experience Director,Pierce County Library
  • Elizabeth Iaukea, Learning Manager, Pierce County Library
  • Julia Lanham, Human Resources, Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

Share your Bookmarks!!

There’s a great online social bookmarking service that recently came to my attention (Diigo.com) that the CLENE community (and all interested in staff development and training) can use to share bookmarks of interest with each other

diigo logo

diigo logo

Playing around today, I set up a CLENERT group at: http://groups.diigo.com/groups/clenert and added a few of my own bookmarks.

Diigo has many nice features including:

  • RSS feed for new content (http://groups.diigo.com/rss/clenert/bookmark)
  • Ability to comment on and discuss bookmarks
  • Automatic caching of bookmarked pages!
  • Ability to view new bookmarks as a slideshow (great for those of us who are visual)
  • Browser based bookmarklet (which allows highlighting, commenting AND virtual sticky notes–so you can annotate those bookmarks!!)

If you want to try it, simply go to http://groups.diigo.com/groups/clenert, click join and add a few bookmarks.  I highly recommend adding the “diigolet” bookmarklet to your browser toolbar–it makes bookmarking and annotating a snap!!  If fact, Pandia Search Engine News just listed it as #1 among the top 5 bookmarking tools.

There are many more possibilities here… I think Diigo lends itself beautifully to collaborative working/learning projects.   So, whaddya all think?

Does your library have a staff training or staff development program you’re proud of? Is someone from your library attending ALA this summer?

If so, you’re invited to participate in the CLENE Training Showcase where you can share information about your program AND learn about the best practices of other libraries and organizations. There is NO COST to participate! All you do is stand by your table and talk about your cool program with people who stop by. It’s really fun! Applications are due on April 1.

The CLENE Round Table Training Showcase will be Sunday, July 12 from 1:30-3:30 pm. The planning committee is on the lookout for libraries, library organizations, presenters, speakers and vendors to participate – anyone who has a great training or staff development program they’d like to share. CLENE is all about sharing ideas (and stealing ideas ?)so this Training Showcase is the perfect venue. If you have any questions, please give us a call!

The Showcase normally attracts between 200-300 attendees over a period of 2 hours – all of whom are interested in training and staff development. The number of participants (presenters) varies from 20-30. It’s a really fun event with refreshments and lots of door prizes. Each participant has a 6’ draped table on which to put a portable table-top display unit, handouts or other related materials.

Please see CLENE Round Table Training Showcase website for more information. There’s a link on the main page for the Training Showcase Page with even more info about the Showcase, along with two online application forms – one for those wishing to participate and one for those want to be a sponsor or a donor.

There are a few photos from last year’s Training Showcase in Anaheim in the Dec. 2008 CLENExchange Newsletter.

Link: How to Present When People Are Twittering

A big thanks to Janie Hermann for bringing this great article to our attention: How to Present When People Are Twittering.

twitter2Olivia Mitchell goes against the conventional wisdom and points out eight benefits to having an active twitter back-channel among your participants and then she takes one step further and suggests that there are even benefits to having your own Twitter back-channel while presenting!

Mitchell has some great advice for managing that back channel and concludes:

Presenting while people are twittering is challenging. But isn’t it better to get that feedback in real-time when you can do something to retrieve the situation – than wait till you read the evaluation sheets a few days after the conference – and find that you bombed?

Webinar: Learning for Learning Profesionals: Competencies, Strategies and Resources”

CLENE and Webjunction are co-sponsoring a great Webinar on Thursday, December 11, 11 a.m. PST, (1;00 CST, 2 p.m. EST): Learning for Learning Professionals: Competencies, Strategies and Resources.

REGISTRATION: http://evanced.info/webjunction/evanced/eventsignup.asp?ID=1546

PRESENTERS: Mary Ross, CLENERT Board member and former manager of staff development at the Seattle Public Library, will lead the discussion. She will be joined by Betha Gutsche, curriculum designer for e-learning initiatives at WebJunction, and Jennifer Homer, vice president of external relations for the American Society of Training and Development.

DESCRIPTION:

As trainers, continuing education coordinators and staff development managers, we believe in lifelong learning. We are committed to helping library employees improve their skills and build successful careers. As cheerleaders for organizational and individual learning, do we sometimes lose sight of our own learning? What are we doing to invest in ourselves? What are the competencies that we will need as we lead our libraries in future skill development and employee learning?

To celebrate Employee Learning Week, join us for an exploration of current and future competencies for learning professionals working in libraries. We will look at strategies for our own development and the resources available to help us pursue them.

ASTD’s Employee Learning Week, December 8-12, features champions, who successfully connect staff learning with achieving results. For more information, go to: http://www.employeelearningweek.org/.

Me Present Pretty One Day

Over at Walking Paper, Aaron Schmidt has started a great conversation on how to give a good presentation.  Pete Bromberg (aka moi) has added his perspective over at the Library Garden blog.  Brenda Hough also weighs in on her blog, Librarians with Class (great blog name!)

So CLENIACS, what are your tips, best practices, double-secret tricks, etc. that you rely on to give kick-ass presentations?

Video intro to the new Webjunction

The new WebJunction is coming… and it looks hot! Check out this sneak preview guided tour led by Michael Porter and Dale Musselman. It’s very social networky, and I mean that in the best sense. Librarians familiar with Facebook will probably feel right at home.

Great Program: Food For Thought

Two posts you just gotta see (guaranteed you’ll get some useful ideas!)

  1. Janie Hermann’s interview with Jon Jiras of RIT Libraries talking about their amazing “Food For Thought” Continuing Ed. program.
  2. Janie’s follow up with Jon, reporting on this year’s (crazy successful) program.

For complete info on the Food for Thought program, see the Food for Thought Homepage. Thanks for sharing all of this wonderful info Jon, and thanks for blogging it Janie!
